    The bid to fill Kevin McKeown's seat on the City Council is off to a slow start, with 14 candidates submitting applications since the process kicked off Wednesday.

    That compares with 35 candidates who applied during the same period for an open seat in January 2019 and a record 115 total applicants for a vacant seat last July.

    Plans to redevelop the grocery store at Lincoln and Broadway will be before the Planning Commission next week for one of the first public discussions.

    The property is currently home to a Von’s store with an above ground parking lot but the proposed project would redevelop the site into a mixed use concept with parking, ground floor retail (grocery store) and several levels of housing.

    The Santa Monica City Council Tuesday night unanimously voted to hire Montebello City Manager René Bobadilla as the new city manager.

    The Council also unanimously voted to bring back former City Manager John Jalili to serve as interim city manager during the transition period when Lane Dilg leaves the post in two weeks.

    Los Angeles City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas spoke Tuesday about the need for federal aid and a “Right to Housing” ahead of the City Council’s approval of a resolution to support any legislation that increases rental assistance resources, including housing vouchers, to help the region address its homelessness crisis.
