    Worried it might be missing the forest for the tree, the Santa Monica City Council on Tuesday voted to allow a lone sycamore to remain while staff crafts a tree ordinance for the entire city.

    The vote capped a four-hour meeting that included testimony from some 70 speakers who debated the merits of an 82-foot-tall tree that has shaded the property at 1122 California Avenue for nearly 100 years.

    Over the past two decades, the Pico Neighborhood has become a very desirable area for developers and land speculators.

    The Pico Neighborhood Association (PNA) and Friends of Sunset Park (FOSP) have been advocating to create the Pico Neighborhood Zoning District (PNZD) to protect the character and scale of the neighborhood.

    On Wednesday night, the Planning Commission will discuss what zoning changes to recommend to the City Council to achieve these goals.

    What has become very clear is that the zoning tool that representatives from PNA and FOSP advocated for has been weaponized against us to do the exact opposite.

    I’ve spent many years trying to figure out what is behind all the secrecy, deviousness and cunning, and the results I see all around me that I find increasingly dismal. What is the master plan they’re all in lockstep with, that is spinning us into this unholy vortex?

    Santa Monica saw 147 fewer serious crimes in the first four months of this year compared to the same period last year, an almost eight percent drop according to numbers provided by the Santa Monica Police Department

    The decrease in part one crimes, which include murder, rape, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, thefts and arson, comes one year after Cynthia Renaud was sworn in as Santa Monica Police Department’s chief of police.

    SANTA MONICA, CA — They call him the nightmare neighbor.

    "He keeps screaming and yelling. Threatening," said Betty Oliver, 70, who lives next door to Mark Yaskoweak — the man who neighbors say has been screaming obscenities and threatening violence at all hours of the day and night for nearly a year.

    Santa Monica added two affordable housing units during the past fiscal year, making it the fewest affordable multi-family residences built in the city in more than a decade, according to a report released Thursday.

    That represents 4 percent of the 46 total units built in the city in Fiscal Year 2017/18, according to the Affordable Housing Progress Report. The last time so few units were built was two in Fiscal Year 2005/06.

    Still, over the past 24 years, the City has cumulatively met the requirement set by local voters in 1990 under Proposition R that 30 percent of new multifamily housing be affordable to low- and moderate-income households.

    California is a place unlike any other on the Globe.  It boasts perhaps the greatest natural resources of any state along with shining high-tech industries.  However, like many good economic stories, government policies threaten its future.

    Indeed, its government has made California unsustainable.

    Landlords could no longer renovate occupied apartments without a tenant’s consent and would be prohibited from subdividing rent-controlled units under a resolution the Rent Control Board is recommending to City Council.

    Landlords are renovating and subdividing apartments to displace long-term tenants, said board member Anastasia Foster. They can then charge higher rents to new tenants or take in even more rent if they subdivide rent-controlled units and rent them as medium-term, furnished vacation rentals or corporate housing. Foster said many tenants believe they have to leave their apartments either temporarily or permanently or take illegal buyouts.

    A group of residents are continuing to fight plans to build a five-story apartment building near Santa Monica State Beach.

    City Council will vote Tuesday whether to deny appeals filed by South Ocean Avenue Residents (SOAR) and UNITE HERE Local 11 that claim that the hoteliers behind the developments at 1828 Ocean Ave. and 1921 Ocean Front Walk will treat the buildings as an extension of their two adjacent hotels, Shutters on the Beach and Hotel Casa Del Mar. SOAR also argues the five-story 1828 Ocean Ave. building will box in the low-slung homes along Vicente Terrace.

    Once again Sacramento is trying to destroy our City and our State. The current Godzilla is Senate Bill 50 (SB50) introduced by the same real estate industry con artist Scott Weiner who tried to destroy our City last year with SB827. That previously defeated bill would have allowed  four to eight story buildings anywhere in our City. The current bill, SB50, does the same thing, only this zombie is more cleverly disguised in a 20-page confusing patchwork of carve-outs for counties of less than 600,000 population and other special interests in a cynical attempt to get the political support sufficient for passage in spite of its patently flawed

    The first flaw is the bill allows 45‘ (four-five story) buildings within 1/2 mile of transit stops and 55’ (five-six stories) buildings within 1/4 mile of transit stops that meet specific 10 minute weekday rush hour bus times and 20 minute weekday (6 a.m.-10 p.m.) bus times.
