    Commissioners Jim Ries, Nina Fresco and Mario Fonda Bonardi contend that their experience on the seven-member commission is needed as the City faces major planning challenges.

    "The city is in an enormous state of flux and the Department of Community Development is under particular pressure to get a great deal done in the immediate future," said Fresco, who along with Fonda-Bonardi is seeking a third term.

    The budget approved on June 27 reflects "the most substantial restoration of services" since the 2020 coronavirus shutdown and provides a plan to "rebuild, restore and reenergize our community," City officials said.

    The budget significantly boosts the total number of full-time employees and as needed employees from 1,889.8 in FY 2020-21 to to 2,100 this year.

    L.A. County supervisors vowed Tuesday to shift the power dynamic, tapping their attorneys to draft an ordinance that would provide certain tenants in unincorporated parts of the county with lawyers during eviction proceedings. The board unanimously approved a motion that gives county staff 10 months to write an ordinance guaranteeing that these at-risk tenants have an attorney helping them navigate the labyrinth of local landlord-tenant law.

    But amid the largest homelessness crisis in the nation, the American’s owner has turned the building into a boutique hotel where tourists can book rooms for as much as $209 a night.

    And the city has done nothing to stop him.

    Of the city's 1,964 buildings initially identified as vulnerable in a quake, five have been demolished. Updated figures show that 599 structures had previously been retrofitted or demolished, and since 2017, 500 more have been made compliant with the seismic safety law, representing 56% of the initial stock of earthquake-vulnerable buildings. An additional 865 buildings have not been retrofitted.

    Tenants of Victor's Cleaning and Tailoring, Santa Monica Rubber Stamp, Crisp Imaging, Tibetan Arts and Santa Monica Guitar this week received notice that they must be out by August 15th, 2023. The one hundred year old structure is about to be demolished and replaced by density.
